DONG Energy’s responsibility work is rooted in the conviction that we can turn the challenges facing the energy sector into opportunities and thus create added value for DONG Energy, long-term financial value for our owners and make a positive contribution to the development of society.
At DONG Energy, we have put solving the climate challenge at the core of our business strategy. In 2010, DONG Energy continued to work on its ambitious plan to expand its production of renewable energy and halve its CO2 emissions by 2020.
We continue to build offshore wind farms at great pace, and, between 2006 and now, we have reduced our coal consumption by one third, from about 6 million tonnes to 4 million tonnes. By 2015, we expect to be able to reduce this by a further 2 million tonnes by switching from coal to biomass.
To that end, we have also opened dialogue with a number of our stakeholders to chart the challenges involved in increasing our biomass consumption.
While we are dramatically expanding with renewable energy, there will continue to be a need for fossil fuels such as gas and oil.
At DONG Energy, we do not compromise on safety when we drill for oil and gas, and we work with public authorities to ensure that we use the most effective safety procedures. We have built up a strong safety culture in which safety is a shared responsibility. Our motto is ‘The safe way - or no way’. Our safety culture has resulted in the lowest number of occupational injuries in the Group’s history.
Regrettably, there were three fatalities among our contractors and subcontractors in 2010. DONG Energy has responsibility for our contractors’ employees when they work for us and these fatalities are unacceptable. These tragic events have caused DONG Energy to take initiatives to improve the safety culture at our contractors.
The requirement for a safe working environment is in keeping with the UN Global Compact, of which DONG Energy is a member. The Global Compact’s ten principles are part of DONG Energy’s core values, which we promote via our responsibility work.
Via its responsibility work, DONG Energy wants to be part of ensuring health, safety and environmental conditions at our suppliers by specifying requirements, checking compliance and following up, and we want to strengthen these efforts via collaboration with other buyers.
This year, the reporting of our responsibility work is even better integrated in our financial annual report. We have also chosen not to produce a separate responsibility magazine in print and have instead expanded our online reporting.
