By land, sea and air

The transportation industry comprise of companies engaged in transportation of both passengers and goods. Therefore, the industry includes shippers, carriers, travel agents, airlines and public transport companies. In Denmark it comprised approx. 14,000 companies in 2008, representing a decrease of 7% since 2000.1

Increase in turnover
Though the number of companies in the industry in 2008 was at a lower level than in 2000, turnover in the industry has increased. As such, the transport industry had a turnover of DKK 216.7 bn. in 2000 compared to DKK 367.8 bn. in 2008  - an increase equivalent of almost 70%.2

Stable export share
Parallel with the general growth in turnover, exports have also increased. As such. exports amounted to DKK 111.7 bn. in 2000 corresponding to 51.5% of total industry turnover. That proportion - with the exception of the years 2001-2002 - was fairly constant close to the average of 48.0% until 2008 when exports amounted to DKK 200.1 bn.

Since 2003, exports as a percentage of the transportation industry’s total turnover have remained above average for the entire period. Thus, exports accounted for 54.5% of total industry turnover in 2008. The period 2001-2002 was a low point with DKK 82.7 bn. in 2002 - corresponding to a share of turnover at 36.2%.3

Fluctuations in employment 
Although both total turnover and exports have increased steadily from 2000 to 2008, there have been major fluctuations in the number of fulltime employees in the transport industry.

From 2001 to 2005, the number of full-time employees decreased by approx. 9,400 equivalent to 7%, however since, the number has increased gradually resulting 1.3% more full-time employees in 2008 compared to 2000.4
