Turnover growth in pharmaceuticals

The pharmaceutical industry is a relatively small industry that comprise of companies manufacturing pharmaceutical products of various kinds. In 2008, the industry accounted for 74 companies, a number that has remained fairly constant since 2000.¹

Great turnover growth
The industry’s 74 companies in 2008 had a turnover of just over DKK 45 bn. or 2.6% of Danish GDP that year. The industry has from 2000 to 2008 increased turnover by 71% which has been fairly evenly distributed over the 8 years.²

Declining exports
The pharmaceutical industry is an industry that is largely dependent on exporting its products. In the period 2000-2008 exports accounted of 74.5% of the total industry turnover, however, exports as a percentage of turnover declined almost the entire period, especially after 2005.³

The decline is partly due to industry exports actually decreasing, partly by increased domestic turnover. As such, exports decreased only 9.7% over the period, while total turnover rose 71%. In 2008, exports accounted for 46.2% of total industry turnover.

Growth in employment From 2000 to 2008, the pharmaceutical industry experienced a positive growth in number of full-time employees though towards the end the number was stagnating. In 2008 there were 16,939 full-time employees in the pharmaceutical industry which is an increase of 69.6% since 2000.⁴
