Paper and packaging is a small business

The paper and packaging industry is a small industry comprising of a number of manufacturers and distributors of paper and packaging products. The industry covers a wide field of book and paper dealers to manufacture for instance plastic packaging.

Slight decline in employment The paper and packaging industry has - like many other industries in which production is included – experiences a negative employment trend in recent years, especially when observing the number of full-time professionals.¹

The number of full-time employees in the industry thus declined from being just over 17,000 in 2003 to be slightly over 16,000 in 2007 before the crisis.

The trend is apparent when observing sub-industries, all of which experienced a slight decline in full time employment in the period 2003 to 2007. However, there are considerable differences depending on sub-industry.²

Especially the companies engaged in manufacturing has suffered a decline in employment, while the decrease was smaller in companies engaged with trade in paper and packaging products (both wholesale and retail). As such, the industry has also experienced a decrease in total payroll.³

Both the payroll and employment rose from 2006 to 2007, however mainly driven by the general economic development during the period.

Development in sales
The developments in employment and wages are not reflected by the development in industry sales, which experienced a significant growth through 2008 when the economic crisis hit.⁴ The industry's total turnover increased from DKK 23 bn. in 2001 to DKK 27.5 bn. in 2008 before the crisis hit and caused a severe decline back to 2001-levels.
