Several actors in the industry

The media industry is an industry that spans wide. As such, the industry comprise of publishing houses, television, radio and newspapers, but also the of computer game as well as other software development and distribution. Moreover production of films and music are included in this industry. Thus, the media industry in 2008 comprised of 3.222 companies – an increase of 22.1% since 2002.¹

Positive turnover growth since 2000
The approx. 3,200 companies in the industry had a turnover just over DKK 43.7 bn. in 2008 or 2.5% of Danish GDP that year. During the period 2000 to 2008, the industry experienced an increasing turnover however the economic crisis influenced the industry from 2007 to 2008 as turnover fell by 4.8%. Overall, turnover in 2008 increased by 46% compared to 2000.²

Focus on domestic market
The media industry is not an industry that is heavily dependent on exports which averaged only 8.8% of total industry turnover. From 2000 to 2007 the proportion fell. The reason is not to be found in a decline in exports which actually increased by 4%. The proportion declined as a result of an relatively higher increase in total industry turnover.³

Employment fell after the crisis
The media industry had 28.112 employees in 2008, which is 7.8% more full-time employees than in 2000. The increase occured mainly between 2002 and 2007, as the economic crisis in 2008 made its influence on both the industry turnover and on employment, which declined by 5% from 2007 to 2008.⁴
