IT and Telecom in growth

The IT and telecommunications industry consists of telecommunications companies, IT companies and other providers of information services. In 2008 the industry had 9,000 companies which is a historically high number.¹

Turnover curve breaks
The 9,000 companies in the industry had a turnover in 2008 of just over DKK 118 bn. or 6.8% of the Danish GDP that year. The IT and telecommunications industry from 2000 to 2007 experienced an increase in turnover, equivalent to just over 65%. In 2007-2008 the industry in turn experienced a decline in turnover of DKK 10 bn.²

The decline in the industry's turnover from 2007 and 2008 is likely to reflect the general economic crisis. Though turnover declined significantly - almost 8% - it occured from a historical high level.

FStable exports
Exports share of total industry turnover since 2000 has fluctuated between approx. 9.6% and 10.6% and exports as a percentage of turnover has - despite minor fluctuations - been relatively stable around an average of approx. 10.2% of total turnover.³

Increase in full-time staff despite turnover decline
The IT and telecommunications industry had 61.578 employees in 2008. The number of employees was in a slump from 2001 to 2005 with the lowest recorded number in 2004. Since then, employment measured in number of employees had risen steadily. It is noticeable that despite a turnover decline of almost 8% from 2007 to 2008, the number of fulltime employees in the same period increased by over 3,000 people.⁴
