People want to be entertained

The entertainment industry covers companies engaged within radio, TV, music, amusement parks, video games, publishing and manufacturing of toys. The industry had nearly 4,500 companies in Denmark in 2008, which is an increase of more than 14% since 2000.1

The industry also includes the category "Toys and other manufacturing" that can comprise of companies which strictly speaking do not belong in this industry. The accurate number of companies is therefore probably slightly lower, therefore also turnover, exports and employment figures may need adjustments.

Despite this uncertainty, it is clear that the industry has experienced changes: In 2008, companies engaged with production of film, TV and music amounts to a significantly larger proportion of the total number of companies in the industry than previously. Further, the publishers' share of the total number of companies in the industry - in 2000 just over 30% - has decreased by approx. 25%.2

Toy drives turnover growth
The entertainment industry experienced a fairly strong growth in turnover from 2000 onwards, and in 2008 experiences a total turnover of DKK 57.7 bn., which was 57.3% more compared to 2000. This figure is however slightly lower than 2007 turnover, which amounted to DKK 58.6 bn.

The change in the entertainment industry's various sub-industries is also evident when observing turnover figures. As publishers in 2000 accounted for 47% of the entire industry's turnover, they only accounted for 36.8% in 2008. This does not mean that publishers' turnover have declined - it is in fact risen by DKK 3.9 bn. - but that publishers' turnover has increased relatively less than in the rest of the industry. Thus, turnover in toys and other manufacturing companies (which also may include companies outside the industry) has grown by as much as 116.6% or DKK 6.3 bn. Turnover in toys and other manufacturing was 14.8% of total industry turnover in 2000 - in 2008 it represented 20.3%.3

Decline in export share
Exports in the entertainment industry averages 17.4% of industry turnover in the period 2000 to 2008. This average, however, conceals relatively large fluctuations.

In 2002, exports amounted to 21.9% of total industry turnover, but in 2008 its share declined to 12.8% - exports as a percentage of turnover thus decreased by nearly 10 percentage points from 2002 to 2008.4

Employment did not turnover
Employment in the entertainment industry has not grown parallel with turnover, and overall growth in the number of full-time employees from 2000 to 2008 is 4.2%. It should be noted that the industry from 2007 to 2008 experienced a significant decrease in the number of full-time employees. Disregarding those years reveal an average increase of 9.3% in the period 2000 to 2007. This development spans over large differences in the various sub-industries. As such, full-time employees within toys and other production fell by 17.7% while the number of employees within developing and publishing of computer games and other software more than doubled.5
