Large and small sub-industries
The energy and supply industry extracts and sells raw materials from and in Denmark. As such, the industry includes both oil and gas refineries, gravel and rock extraction and various utilities (electricity, gas, water and heat supply). In this industry there were in 2008 approx. 3,900 companies which is approx. 700 or 16% fewer companies than in 2000.1
The sub-industries in the energy and utilities vary in sizes. For example, there was at no time in the period 2000 to 2008 fewer than 1,230 electricity supply companies, while in the same period a maximum of 10 registered companies dealing with oil and gas.
Distribution has nonetheless changed over the period. For example, the number of electricity companies has fallen by over 38% from 2000 to 2008, while the number of companies providing services to extraction nearly doubled, albeit from a very low base.
By contrast, the number of water companies is quite stable in the range between 1,800 and 2,000 companies throughout the period.2
Doubling turnover
Turnover in the industry was in the period 2006-2007 relative stability of approx. DKK 145-150 bn. In 2008, turnover increased by approx. 16% compared to the year before and reached nearly DKK 170 bn, excluding gas suppliers turnover data, which in 2005 generated sales of approx. DKK 20 bn., hence, the total industry turnover is probably higher.3
The total turnover for the entire industry is relatively uncertain, while turnover in the sectors oil and gas, extraction of gravel and stones, and service to mining is relatively accurate. The three sub-industries experienced a turnover growth of 116% throughout the period 2000 to 2008, that is, more than doubling of turnover.4
Uncertain exporrt figures
As with turnover figures, export figures are somewhat uncertain. As such, only export figures for the following sub-industries are accounted for; oil and gas extraction, extraction of gravel and stones and service for mining and quarrying. The three sub-industries are relatively export-intensive, and in the period 2000 to 2008, exports totalled 37.7% of their turnover. The export share fluctuated around this average.5
Stable employment
Throughout the energy and utilities sector, the number of full-time employees has remained relatively unchanged around 12,000 persons by 2005, although with slight fluctuations in 2003 and 2004. From 2005 onwards the number of fulltime employees in the industry increased, and in 2008 there were 15,500 full-time equivalent of nearly 30% more than in 2000.
