Small and medium in the electronics industry

The electronics industry consists primarily of niche producing small and medium enterprises, which, because of the high Danish education level, are able to compete in the global market. The electronics industry is in terms of turnover the third largest industry sector in Denmark only surpassed by the machine and the food industries. In 2008 the electronics industry consisted of approx. 1,000 companies and that has not changed since 2000.¹

Turnover fluctuations in the 2000s
The electronics industry’s total turnover experienced fluctuations during the period from 2000 to 2008, though since 2005 turnover increased steadily until 2007 when it reached its preliminary peak of DKK 52.3 bn. From 2007 to 2008, turnover in the electronics industry decreased with nearly DKK 1 bn. – equivalent to a decrease of 2.1%.

Turnover has between 2000 to 2008 fluctuated between approx. DKK 40 and 50 bn. The lowest was in 2005 with DKK 41.5 bn., which is more than 1/4 lower than the peak in 2007.²

Large export industry
The electronics industry exports is global, however the local markets in neighboring countries such as Germany, Sweden, Norway and Britain are the main customers. In the period 2000 to 2008, exports accounted almost 60% of the total industry turnover.

An average of 60% however conceals some variations. In 2002, exports accounted for 56% of total turnover, which is 6.5 percentage points below its peak for 2007.³

Small decrease in employment
The electronics industry in 2008 employed approx. 32,000 full time employees, which is 4,000 fewer full-time employees than in 2000 when it was approx. 36,000 full-time staff - equivalent to a decrease of 12%. Full-time employment in the industry peaked in 2001 when there were more than 39,000 employees. It is more than 41% more than at its lowest in 2005.⁴
