A conglomerate of companies

Conglomerates are not a industry like other industries as conglomerates are defined as companies which has spread its activities across various industries, for example, through ownership of subsidiaries which are engaged differently. Therefore, there is also no overall industry statistics for these companies.

Among the 1,000 largest companies in Denmark are 20 conglomerates, which are possible to describe as being in a single group. They are A.P. Møller-Mærsk, USTC (United Shipping and Trading), DLG, Scandinavian Tobacco Group, Schouw & Co., EAC, GN Store Nord, DLA Agro, Thornico, Sara Lee Norden, C.W. Obel, the Lego koncernen, Proark, Unilever Denmark, Lind Holding, Fritz Schur Technical Group A/S, C.A.C. Foundation, R2 Group A/S, Stensdal Group A/S and Exmo Fur A/S.

A.P Møller-Mærsk dominates
The 20 largest conglomerates in Denmark and their company turn out an annual turnover somewhat in the vicinity of DKK 400 bn. The exact amount is subject to some uncertainty.¹

Certain is it, that A.P. Møller-Mærsk without comparison is the company with the largest turnover.² A.P. Møller-Mærsk's turnover in 2009 was approx. DKK 261.5 bn., which corresponds to approx. 2/3 of the 20 largest conglomerates' total turnover.

The same goes for employment. The 20 conglomerates and their companies employ approx. 158,000 people out of which the A.P. Møller-Mærsk Group employs approx. 115,000, equivalent to almost 73%.³ The number of employees in the industry, however - like the turnover figures – are subject to some uncertainty.⁴
